The story as such primarily adapts from the movie with certain scenes altered for the visuals of the comic - with additional scenes designed to introduce and develop Nick Fury along with setting up Iron Man 2 in the process.
The extra scenes are as follows:
- When Tony ends up escaping from the Ten Rings he ends up on the radar of S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Jasper Sitwell, bringing it to the attention of Colonel Fury. The signal gets lost when Tony Stark crashes in the desert. Being the first lead to find Tony Stark, they notify the United States Department of Defense - meaning this extra scene implies they were instrumental in helping them rescue Tony Stark.
- During the events of the F-22 Raptor encounter with Iron Man, Jasper Sitwell and Nick Fury are shown to spot the situation occurring via radar. Nick Fury attempts to contact the F-22 Raptors to call them off, but it's too late as they have already attacked Iron Man.
- After Nick Fury reveals that he wants to talk to Tony Stark about the Avengers Initiative, Tony reacts hostile, threatening Nick Fury and rejecting the offer. Nick Fury leaves, contacting Phil Coulson advising that they should try and reason with Tony via a different approach remarking on Natasha Romanoff who is also known Black Widow.
In later films it is revealed that Jasper Sitwell is a Hydra Agent, meaning it is possible that if Nick Fury had not been there, Sitwell may never have reported on Tony Stark being in the desert. While the comic does serve primarily as a retelling of the movie the Nick Fury segments do help emphasise the idea that Nick Fury was watching Tony Stark and had a hand in the events that led Tony to survive the kidnapping in Afghanistan.
